Welcome to Year 6!
Welcome to our Year 6 webpage for both of our wonderful classes: 'Shakespeare' & 'J R Tolkien'.
You will gain an insight into our family and we will share our learning journey throughout the year with you.
Science
Autumn |
Electricity and Renewable Energy Living Things and Their Habitats |
In the Autumn term, pupils deepen their understanding of living things by classifying plants, animals, and micro-organisms based on observable characteristics and exploring how adaptations help them survive in different environments. They investigate the human circulatory system, learning how diet, exercise, and lifestyle impact health, while also studying evolution and inheritance through fossils and offspring variation. Additionally, pupils build on their knowledge of electricity by constructing circuits, identifying components, and exploring conductors and insulators to understand how electrical systems work safely and effectively.

Spring |
Light and Light Pollution Variation and Adaptations |
During Spring, pupils deepen their understanding of living things by classifying plants, animals, and micro-organisms into broad groups based on observable characteristics, including invertebrates and vertebrates, and explore reasons for these classifications. They study the human circulatory system, learning about the heart, blood vessels, and how diet, exercise, drugs, and lifestyle affect health. Pupils also investigate evolution and inheritance by recognising how living things have changed over time, how offspring vary, and how adaptations help animals and plants survive in their environments. |
Summer |
The Circulatory System Diet, Drugs and Lifestyle Fossils |
During the Summer term, pupils classify living things into detailed groups including micro-organisms, plants, and animals, using scientific classification systems and understanding the reasons behind these groupings. They explore the human circulatory system and learn how lifestyle choices like diet, exercise, and drug use affect bodily functions. Pupils also investigate evolution and inheritance by studying fossils, variation in offspring, and how adaptations enable survival in different environments, building on foundational knowledge of living things and their habitats.

History
Autumn |
Impact of World Wars Keep Calm and Carry On |
Year 6 pupils explore the causes, key events, and significant figures of World War II, including Hitler, Churchill, and the Treaty of Versailles. They learn about life during the war: The Blitz, evacuation, women’s roles, and the Holocaust while investigating the global alliances and the experiences of ordinary people in Britain and beyond. Pupils also study the lasting effects of the war, such as rationing and the creation of the Welfare State, developing their historical enquiry skills through a range of sources and activities. |
Spring |
British Empire Magnificent Monarchs |
In Spring, pupils explore the rise and fall of the British Empire, learning what it was, how it was formed, and the many countries it included. They investigate the voyages of famous explorers like Sir Francis Drake and the complex legacy of the Empire, including its links to the transatlantic slave trade and its impact on countries like India. Pupils also study the reasons behind the Empire’s decline and reflect on its positive and negative effects, developing their historical enquiry skills through timelines, debates, and research projects. |
Summer |
Immigration - Windrush Links to Local History |
During Summer, Year 6 pupils explore the rich history of immigration to Britain, focusing on the Windrush generation and the diverse communities that have shaped modern Britain. They learn why people from the Caribbean and the Indian subcontinent migrated to the UK, the challenges they faced, including prejudice and discrimination, and their vital contributions to British society. Through research, discussions, and creative projects, pupils develop a deeper understanding of migration’s impact and celebrate the achievements of individuals from immigrant backgrounds who continue to inspire us today. |
Geography
Autumn |
South America |
In Autumn, pupils embark on an exciting journey to explore South America, learning to locate countries and key physical and human features, including Brazil’s diverse landscapes and vibrant cities. They compare Brazil’s climate, landmarks, and culture with those of England, investigate the journey of South American fruits to the UK, and deepen their understanding of social issues such as street children and poverty in Rio de Janeiro. Through map skills, research, tasting activities, and thoughtful discussions, pupils develop a rich and balanced understanding of this diverse continent. |
Spring |
Global Warming and Climate Change |
During the Spring term, pupils explore the critical issue of climate change, understanding what it is and how global warming influences our planet. They learn about greenhouse gases, their sources like fossil fuels and deforestation, and the vital role of the ozone layer in protecting Earth from harmful UV rays. |
Summer |
Mapping |
During Summer, this learning is deepened further and pupils will investigate the human impact on climate, the consequences such as rising sea levels and extreme weather, and engage with inspiring campaigns like Greta Thunberg’s, using map skills, research, and data collection to deepen their knowledge and inspire action. |
What else are we up to?
Opportunities for cross-curricular learning are embraced throughout, enhancing pupils’ engagement and understanding across subjects.
